Like many pieces of large-scale government infrastructure, the Post Office spawned piggyback improvements such as the catalog mail-order business, which bloomed at the fin de siècle, bringing items from Sears, Roebuck & Company and myriad other.

This week above all others ought to be the trigger for a serious appraisal of immigration in 21st-century Britain.

No one denies this would be a complex - and for some, uncomfortable - subject, with passionately held views on all sides.

But it should no longer be brushed aside, because the scale of migration has huge implications for the future character, prosperity and cohesion of our nation.

The public is justifiably angry that the immigration and asylum system seems to be broken. They are baffled how, with Brexit done, the Government is still failing to control our borders.

We desperately need a mature, clear-headed and - above all - insult-free debate about what is going wrong.

Abdul Ezedi (pictured) is wanted for allegedly attacking a mother and her daughters with a corrosive substance

The question is: Are our political leaders capable of meeting this huge challenge? Depressingly, the evidence of the past three decades suggest they're not. Look, for a start, at legal migration. Official figures predict the UK's population will reach almost 74 million by 2036, after an unprecedented 6.6 million surge - equivalent to five cities the size of Birmingham.

The difference from previous population booms is this time migrants would account for a staggering 92 per cent of the rise.

Yes, the vast majority of those coming here are upstanding citizens who contribute hugely to our society. But voters never consented to such an enormous influx.

Britain couldn't possibly handle such rapid upheaval. Our housing, schools, hospitals and other services are already groaning under sheer weight of numbers.

Another downside of mass immigration reared its ugly head on Thursday. Tory MP Mike Freer, a friend of Israel who represents a strongly Jewish constituency, announced he was stepping down after a decade of death threats from Islamist extremists.

Despite enjoying the security of Britain, these religious radicals loathe our liberal values. Yet the powers-that-be, fearing racism accusations, stand supinely by as Muslim mobs threaten violence against anyone who disagrees with them.

And now we have the appalling case of Abdul Ezedi, wanted for allegedly attacking a mother and her daughters with a corrosive substance. This grimmest of crimes has left many troubling questions in its wake. But chief among them must be: What on earth was this coward doing in Britain at all?

Having illegally sneaked into this country in a lorry in 2016, the Afghan refugee was twice refused asylum. Then, despite subsequently being convicted of sexual assault, he was granted sanctuary after supposedly converting to Christianity.

Could there be more damning proof of the manifold failures of our asylum system?

Why wasn't he kicked out at the first opportunity? The unpalatable truth is, once here, the chance of deporting a foreign criminal or failed refugee is minute.

There is a brigade of human-rights activists and Left-leaning lawyers advancing spurious claims and soft judges acting as a roadblock against the public interest.

The time has come for root-and-branch reform of this broken system - after years of open abuse and failed opportunities.

The public has repeatedly demanded lower immigration, the removal of bogus asylum seekers and tighter borders. The political class must now listen (File image)

Rishi Sunak's Rwanda Bill contains measures to deter illegal migrants. Inevitably, though, it is being held up by condescending unelected Lords.

While it's true the Government has had ample time to solve these issues, a Labour government wouldn't do any better. After all, Sir Keir Starmer has form for helping halt the deportation of violent criminals and calling for open borders.

The public has repeatedly demanded lower immigration, the removal of bogus asylum seekers and tighter borders. The political class must now listen.

As things stand, the establishment is breaking the social contract. The safety and well-being of the public seems to be of secondary concern. This cannot continue.
